FERRIDAY — Dwayne Taylor has resigned as head football and basketball coach of Delta Charter School for personal reasons.
Taylor, who became head coach of the basketball team in 2014 and head football coach at the start of 2015, declined going into detail for the reasoning of his resignation.
“I just had some issues at the house, and it was taking a whole bunch of my time. I have to step back and focus on family and other issues,” Taylor said.
Delta Charter board member Craig Jackson cited personal reasons for Taylor’s departure, as well, saying Taylor had some things he needed to focus on. Jackson said Delta Charter baseball coach Jarrett Hoffpauir will step up and serve as interim football coach this season.
“He will be the interim head coach, and coach Steve Davis will be his right-hand man,” Jackson said. “We’ve got great assistant coaches, and it’s business as usual. We’re still pumped about the first game.”
Hoffpauir said there would be no changes made to any offensive or defensive philosophies because of the time element involved. With two weeks ways from the start of the 2015 football season, Hoffpauir said Davis, as offensive coordinator, will continue to run the offense put in place during the summer.
“There will be no drastic changes,” Hoffpauir said. “Whatever is best for this program and this school, I will do. I have Steve by my side, so I think we will be fine.”
Jackson said he talked to girls coach Ronald Ellis about becoming the boys basketball coach this season, and Ellis said he would be up for the challenge. Jackson said Ellis has not been named the official coach yet, however.
“We’re addressing that,” Jackson said. “We’ve talked to Coach Ellis, and he said he would coach both boys and girls if he needed to. We obviously don’t want that to happen because that’s a lot of work. He’s a team player, though. When we get into a crisis, everybody steps up. If we find a good basketball coach between now and basketball season, we will hire him, but we won’t hire just anybody, especially when we have someone like Ellis.”
Taylor recorded a 21-4 basketball record last season.
