NATCHEZ — A wheelchair bound Natchez man died in a house fire Thursday afternoon at 8 Davis Lane.

Adams County Coroner James Lee said a Natchez firefighter dragged Lee Andrew Jones, 63, out of his house.

“The rescue was unsuccessful,” Lee said, adding that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Jones’ death.

Natchez Fire Department Chief Aaron Wesley said the NFD responded to the call at approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday.

“The fire was located somewhere in his bedroom, but we don’t know how it started,” Wesley said. “It’s all under investigation right now.”

Wesley said the victim lived alone, and no one else was injured in the fire.

Jones’ sister, Virginia L. Jones — who lived next door to Lee Andrew Jones — said she found peace Thursday knowing her brother was “resting well with God.”

“I would see him roll down the street each morning to catch the Natchez Transit to go to dialysis,” Virginia Jones said. “Before he got sick, I think he led a full life.”

Wesley said this is the first time in approximately seven years that Natchez has had a fatal fire.

“It was a great effort by the Natchez Fire Department. They did everything they could,” Wesley said. “Sometimes, these things just happen though.”
