VIDALIA — A new chapter will be written in the long-storied rival that is Vidalia vs. Ferriday, even though the meeting between the two will be brief.
Tensas joins Ferriday in the 2015 Vidalia Jamboree tonight, which will match both teams against one another and Vidalia. The length of each contest will last a quarter, with Vidalia taking on Tensas at 6 p.m., followed by Tensas vs. Ferriday and concluding with Vidalia vs. Ferriday.
The jury is still out on who will start at quarterback for Vidalia. Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock said both Jordan Mays and Tristan Weatherly will share reps in the jamboree.
“I haven’t flipped a coin yet,” said Hancock on determining which quarterback would start today. “Both will have an equal amount of reps.”
On the opposite side, Ferriday head coach Dwight Woods said Trojans starting quarterback Ronald Williams will lead his team. Woods hopes to see more progression in Williams, who is still learning the basic concepts Woods installed during the summer.
“He has to work on his reads and get quicker at it,” Woods said. “He’s holding onto the ball a little bit too long, and we want him to get away from doing that. Other than that, everything is going pretty well.”
Woods said his defense couldn’t blow coverage assignments against the Vikings, who he expects will throw the ball a lot against them.
Defensively for Vidalia, the Vikings will start five freshmen, and after bringing long-time assistant Tommy Lanius in to work with several of them, defensive coordinator Dee Faircloth said his younger players are improving.
“They’re going to be great one day, and they’re coming,” Faircloth said. “We’re starting from zero going into this. But we have to go against the Arizona Cardinals (today).”
Woods said though his team is athletic, he will be experimenting with using a two-platoon squad, starting players on one side of the ball at the beginning of the season.
The jamboree will serve as a primer for both local teams, as the regular season begins Friday.
