Our canine pals honor us all of the time.

Whether it is being an obedient and constant companion, or just something soft and fluffy to pet, dogs are always there for their owners.

Natchez gets a chance to reciprocate that love come Sept. 19 at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians starting at 10 a.m. at the 23rd annual Bark in the Park.

It is a day all about the dogs and a fundraiser for the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society.

“It’s a fun day for the public,” NACHS President Kathy Fitch said. “And it is a big fundraiser for us.”

Along with being a day to show dogs some love, the event also gives owners a chance to get competitive by entering their dogs into various competitions.

“Some people go all out,” said event organizer Deanne Tanksley. “Last year’s best dressed dog winner was a poodle who’s hair was dyed a bunch of different colors.”

“We want people to put their dogs in as many different competitions as possible.”

Contest judging begins at 10:30 a.m.

Trophies will be handed out to the winners.

“It is the only competition where it is permissible to bribe the judges,” Tanksley said. “It’s true, there is a tip jar at the judges table.”

And for the first time, that bribe money along with all other money raised from concessions, T-shirts and entry will go to support the NACHS’s new building.

“It is an exciting time to support the humane society,” Tanksley said.

“I want this year’s to be the biggest and best one yet. We are trying to drum up as much excitement as possible for the new building.”

Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $1 for children. Each contest has an entry fee of $2 per dog.

The NACHS will have adoptable cats and dogs at the event. For more information or to view adoptable pets, call 601-422-4001 or visit natchezpetadoptions.org.
