ACCS looks to follow up big win

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School Rebels are trying to avoid a Friday night hangover, coming off of a 40-14 win against Jackson Academy last Friday.
Ahead of the Rebels is Bowling Green, and though ACCS enters as a heavy favorite in the matchup, head coach David King said the victory against Jackson Academy didn’t come without a cost.
“It was exciting, but it’s taken its toll,” King said. “We have four starters that are injured and won’t play in this game because of it. I thought we’ve had some good workouts this week, though, despite being as worn out as we were.”
Missing in action will be leading receiver George Scott, who recorded 130 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions against Jackson Academy last Friday; Cole Gatlin, starting defensive tackle; Morgan Nettle, starting left guard and Caden Gillespie, who had been pushing for a starting job on the defensive line.
Scott is out two-to-three weeks with a collarbone injury, Gatlin is out with a shoulder injury, Nettles is out with a knee injury and Gillespie has been in the hospital with a staff infection most of this week.
The injuries, combined with Bowling Green’s 2-0 start, gives King some concern about tonight’s matchup.
“It’s got the recipe for a sloppy game if we don’t overcome these injuries,” King said. “The good thing that comes out of these injuries is we have guys that get a chance to perform and find out how good they are.”
Undoubtedly, hype is circulating around ACCS, with the Rebels receiving the most votes outside the top 5 in overall Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. But King acknowledged that hype is only hype, and it’s time for the Rebels to take care of business on the road with a 7 p.m. start time.
“If we go out there and lay an egg, last Friday was all for naught,” King said.
