FERRIDAY — Delta Charter began its varsity football season with an exclamation point, having beaten Lake Charles College Prep 30-6 last Friday night.
And heading into his second game as head coach, Jarrett Hoffpauir is looking to continue the momentum gained in Week 1.
“I think that first win was big for a lot of reasons,” Hoffpauir said. “We obviously had a big crowd here and that was nice to come out on top in our first ever varsity contest.”
In order to keep the Storm rolling, Delta Charter needs to thwart what Hoffpauir called a “well-disciplined” team that loves to run the football in Cedar Creek. Because the Storm will face a physical running team, Hoffpauir challenged his linemen to be more physical at the point of attack this week.
“We’re going to have to win the ballgame upfront, and that’s the bottom line,” Hoffpauir said. “They run a lot of Power-I stuff, and we got a little fatigued last week in the second half. We had a lot of mental mistakes, things we can control. So that’s what we’ve been preaching this week.”
As for Delta Charter’s offense, the word is out on wide receiver Dawson Woodruff. In Week 1, Woodruff recorded a passing touchdown, receiving touchdown and returned a kick for a touchdown.
“It’s no secret, he’s a football player,” Hoffpauir said. “He understands the game and does everything well.”
Delta Charter will host Cedar Creek at 7 p.m. Friday.
