NATCHEZ — Visitation services for John Edward Freedman, 71, who died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Merit Health Natchez, will be 3 p.m. Friday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel.

John and Dolly, who lived in New Jersey and the Washington, D. C. area for a number of years, fell in love with Natchez and made the decision to retire here five years ago to be near their family.  He was an avid sports fan — particularly of the Washington Redskins.  He loved the outdoors, playing golf, working in the yard and was never daunted by the heat and humidity of the south, which he loved.

He graduated from Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va., and subsequently attended the Capitol Institute of Technology in Washington, D. C., receiving his degree in engineering.

John worked for 33 years with the well-known Parsons Corporation in Washington and New York City.  His job carried him all over the world, working in Germany, Singapore and China.  He was meticulous and took pride in his accomplishments, receiving special recognition for his work on the Eastside Access Project.

He was a dedicated husband, devoted father and adoring grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Freedman.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Paulette “Dolly” Freedman; one daughter, Pam Freedman Horton and husband, Dee, of Natchez; one son, Lt. Col. John Douglas Freedman and wife, Lori, of Montgomery, Ala.; four granddaughters, Taylor and Rylie Horton of Natchez and Kira and Allison Freedman of Yorktown, Va.; and one brother, Charles Freedman of Savannah, Ga.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or the Mississippi Chapter at 196 Charmant Drive, Suite 4, Ridgeland, MS  39057 or to a charity of choice.
