NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was arrested Thursday evening after he allegedly tried to run down four law enforcement officers with his vehicle.

Contrell Demond Shelly, 27, 205 E. Franklin St., was booked into the Adams County Jail on charges of three counts aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the incident.

An Adams County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said in a news release a sheriff’s deputy responded to a call of shots fired on Minor Street shortly before the incident, finding three Natchez Police officers interviewing people in a vehicle at the scene.

While the interview was ongoing, the officers heard another vehicle rev its engine, and the vehicle sped toward the officers. The officers were able to avoid being struck, but the deputy had to jump on top of his vehicle, the spokesperson said.

The deputy, whose vehicle was facing the same direction as the fleeing vehicle, followed the vehicle that allegedly attacked the officers and eventually pulled the vehicle over, arresting Shelly.

The suspect was detained without bond Friday evening.
