NATCHEZ — Fifteen years of attending Ole Miss football games in Oxford has brought Matthew Hall to a celebratory occasion Saturday.

In the grove, with family and friends dressed in red and blue, Hall will attend his 100th straight home game when the Rebels take on Vanderbilt.

“I sat down and counted it up,” Hall said. “If Vanderbilt wins, I’ll have seen 60 wins and 40 losses at home in that time.”

Hall has taken part of many historic moments at Ole Miss over the past 15 years, including upsetting No. 1 Alabama in Oxford last season. The moments that stick out to him most have been the games he’s attended as a child. Wins like upsetting a Rex Grossman-led Florida at home in 2002 and a 27-24 win against Alabama in 2001 hold sentimental value. Perhaps because in those games, Hall was accompanied with his parents.

“My dad (Dr. David Hall) took me to my first two games of the streak, and he would always take me when I was a kid,” Hall said. “Then, when he passed in 2001, my mom (Christina Hall) didn’t want me to lose out on being a kid, so she started taking me to games until 2005.”

With both parents deceased, Hall has kept the locally known Hall tailgate afloat, averaging anywhere from 20 to 40 people a home game.

Hall began the streak at the age of 12, and today, at 27, Hall makes the trip to Oxford with his wife Elizabeth Hall and 4-month-old daughter Abigail.

“I’m not sure if I’ll make 200 because I’ve got my own little family now,” Hall said. “Don’t get me wrong, (Abigail) is great at traveling, but as she gets older, she’s going to have events on the weekends.”

For Hall, it wasn’t until around 2008 when the streak was brought to his attention. His college roommate Drew David mentioned to him that he had attended several home games in a row, and curiosity forced Hall to look up the exact amount. After realizing he surpassed 70, David told him he should shoot for 100.

And though Hall can recall all the memorable games he’s attended, he still remembers the game he missed on Oct. 28, 2000.

“It was a home game against UNLV, and I missed it because my seventh grade basketball coach decided to have tryouts at Cathedral that day,” Hall said.

Though Hall isn’t making 200 his next goal, he doesn’t plan on ending the streak any time soon either.

“We’re going to take one step at a time,” Hall said.
