MOREAUVILLE — In order for the Vidalia Vikings to improve to 2-0 in district play, Vidalia will have to slow down Avoyelles’ double-wing offense tonight.

“(That offense) is not something you see every day,” Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock said. “They’ll likely wear black helmets, black jerseys and get as low as they can behind that offensive line.”

The Avoyelles Mustangs are anything but conventional. The (1-3) Mustangs are a team that onside kicks after every score and does not punt.

Last season, Avoyelles beat the Vikings 64-12, and Hancock said his team hasn’t forgotten.

“If I told you I didn’t think about that score, I’d be lying to you,” Hancock said. “But the bottom line is we just want to get the win. If they want to try and score 100 on us in this game, they’ll be overlooking us.”

So far, Avoyelles has not been as successful as it was a year ago. The Mustangs, which ended the season with a 5-6 record, are 1-3 with its only win coming against Sicily Island by way of forfeit.

Vidalia, on the other hand, enters this game at 2-2. So far this season, the Vikings have been getting it done offensively on the ground with Julian Wilson amassing 597 rushing yards through four games.

“He’s a special runner,” Hancock said. “But our offensive linemen have been getting better, understanding run blocking. Most of the guys were starting last year that probably shouldn’t have been, but that’s what happens when you’re trying to rebuild. It’s paid off for us this year, though.”

The Vikings will try to stop Avoyelle’s double-wing attack and run behind its offensive line to victory tonight on the road in a 7 p.m. contest.
