SICILY ISLAND — The Sicily Island Tigers had 24 first downs, 353 yards of total offense and no turnovers in its LHSAA District 2-1A game Friday night against the Oak Grove Tigers.

And yet it still wasn’t enough as Oak Grove’s offense was too much for Sicily Island’s defense to slow down as the visiting Tigers used a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 60-28 win over the host Tigers.

Tyreke Tolliver had another strong performance with his legs and his arm. He had nine carries for 146 yards and complete four of six passes for 101 yards. Devion Dunbar had three catches for 104 yards to go with 10 total tackles and one fumble recovery.

The problem was that Sicily Island fell behind 22-0 in the first half and tried to erase all that deficit in the third quarter. Even though the homestanding Tigers put up 20 points in that quarter, they gave up 14 points to Oak Grove and still trailed 36-20.

Apparently, Sicily Island wore down in the fourth quarter and allowed another 24 points while scoring just eight points.

Jameon Tolliver had nine carries for 50 yards and had nine total tackles on defense. Ryan Mason went 3-for-6 passing for 65 yards. Johnny Tolliver also had 10 total tackles and one quarterback sack.

Sicily Island (0-5, 0-2) will be on the road next Friday at 7 p.m. when it takes on Delhi Charter in a district match-up.
