Funds found for lighting at shelter

NATCHEZ — The future at Adams County’s FEMA 361 storm safe room may be a little brighter after all.

Adams County Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said he and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials have found a solution that will provide lighting at the site without additional cost to the county.

While the $3.4 million shelter has been fully funded through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant, the exterior lighting for the site was apparently not in the contract for work. The county board of supervisors instructed Bradford last month to find a solution that could be done at no cost to the county.

“I went to Rankin County, which has a tornado safe room, and they have a similar situation with no parking lot,” Bradford said. “But they do have flood lights mounted on top of the building, and I talked with the sheriff’s deputy who runs the room, and he said it works really well for them at night.”

Bradford said the plan will light approximately 60 percent of the parking lot. MEMA has agreed to include the cost of the lights under the grant contract for the shelter’s construction, which means the county won’t be out any extra money.

The site — which was at one time an RV park — originally had a lighting system, and those lights were saved. Bradford has previously said, however, those lights are not appropriate for the shelter’s needs.

Members of the board of supervisors expressed this week satisfaction that the new lights could be provided at no cost to the county.
