FERRIDAY — For the first time since Week 1, the Delta Charter Storm found itself in the winning column as it defeated the Sicily Island Tigers 28-6 Friday night to get out of the basement in LHSAA District 2-1A.
Jaylen Williams led Delta Charter’s rushing attack with 139 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Freddie Mango had 11 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown while Tut Hatten added 41 yards and a score on five carries.
The Storm’s defense had a pivotal role in the outcome of this game with two fumble recoveries and three interceptions by Dawson Woodruff. That same defense also held Sicily Island’s Tyreke Tolliver to just 60 yards on 11 carries.
On offense, Delta Charter had 33 first downs and racked up over 300 yards of total offense. Trey Poole completed five of 11 passes for 74 yards with just one interception.
Mango scored on a five-yard run, but the two-point conversion was no good, leaving Delta Charter ahead 6-0.
Tolliver ran in from three yards out, but the conversion was no good and the first quarter ended in a 6-6 tie.
Williams scored on a three-yard run and Poole found Lee Lancaster for the two-point conversion and a 14-6 Storm advantage in the second quarter. Hatten scored on an 11-yard run and Travontae Pryor scored on a two-point conversion run to give the home team a 22-6 lead.
Williams capped off the victory with a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The only thing that Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir probably was not too pleased with was the amount of penalties the Storm accumulated – 13 of them for 162 yards.
Delta Charter (2-6, 1-4) next plays at Delhi High School at 7 p.m. Friday. Sicily Island (0-8, 0-5) plays host to Beekman Charter Friday.
