SICILY ISLAND — The Sicily Island High School Tigers finally got their first win of the 2015 season as they took care of the Beekman Charter School Tigers 44-14 Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-1A game.
Both Sicily Island and Beekman Charter went into this game without a win to their credit – 0-8 overall and 0-5 in district play. The visiting Tigers from Bastrop, La., struck first in the first quarter and led 8-0.
However, the host Tigers responded in a big way and outscored the visitors 44-6 over the final three quarters. Courtney Boatner led Sicily Island’s ground game with 153 yards on just eight carries. Tyreke Tolliver had six carries for 120 yards.
As a team, Sicily Island racked up 402 of its 451 total yards of offense on the ground and amassed 25 first downs. The Tigers didn’t have to throw the ball very much, either. Ryan Mason was 2-for-4 for 34 yards and Tolliver went 1-for-3 for 15 yards. Devion Dunbar had two catches for 34 yards.
Johnny Tolliver led the Tigers’ defense with two solo tackles, six assists and one fumble recovery. Lamonte Cotton had three solo tackles to go with 11 assists.
Efforts to reach head coach Stephen Collins for comments were unsuccessful.
Sicily Island (1-8, 1-5) will look to finish the season on a two-game winning streak, but it will not be easy when St. Frederick comes to town next Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
