WCCA Rams are one win away from state title berth

WOODVILLE — One win is all that separates Wilkinson County Christian Academy from a berth in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AA state championship game.
Standing in the Rams’ way is No. 13 seed Benton Academy, a team that has already taken out the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds.
“They have two really big tackles in the middle, making it hard to run inside, and they have two good running backs and a quarterback that can run around, too,” WCCA head coach Chris McGraw said.
But the No. 1 seeded Rams’ certainly don’t lack in the running game either, led by quarterback Caleb Poole, who has recorded multiple 300-yard rushing games this season.
“We are going to keep letting him have the ball,” McGraw said. “He sees the hole and cuts with it. He is going to get touches, but it actually wasn’t until week 10 when he took the lead in carries for the team.”
Poole is joined in the backfield by Kyle Folds and Steven Franks, who have had their fair share of yards and touchdowns this season.
WCCA isn’t new to the spotlight, reaching the state championship game in the 2012-13 season, but the majority of this year’s team has experienced struggle, going 2-10 and 3-7 in the past two seasons.
“It is going to be challenging,” McGraw said of playing in the big game. “You can tell the kids are feeling the nerves. But we do have two that started in that state championship game as freshman and understand what it is about and are big time leaders.”
For McGraw, bringing a championship back to WCCA would be a dream come true.
“It’d be pretty surreal considering I was born and raised here,” he said. “Coming home where I graduated from, it would be pretty crazy to make it to the finals in my first year as head coach.”
The Rams and Raiders are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Woodville.
