NATCHEZ — A Natchez police officer remained hospitalized late Saturday after being shot, allegedly by the officer’s wife.
Violette Prater, 42, 1302 Eastwood Road, was arrested Saturday night on charges of attempted murder. No bond has been set.
Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said officer Elvis Prater was shot at his residence. White said Prater was later airlifted to Rapides Medical Center in Alexandria, La., for treatment. Police officers responded to the call at 4:41 p.m. Prater was not on duty at the time of the shooting, White said.
Wounds show that Prater was either shot once in the back or chest, but White said he could not determine from the report which was the entrance wound or which was the exit wound.
The police chief said he believed no one else was in the house at the time of shooting.
White said he talked to Prater on the phone at the hospital late Saturday evening and he appeared to be doing OK.
The incident remains under investigation., White said.
Prater was an independent candidate for the Adams County Sheriff’s race, but pulled his name from the ballot just prior to the election. Prater was thrust into the spotlight when he was charged with the 2009 beating of a suspect in police custody. A federal jury later acquitted him of the charge in 2011, releasing him back to police work.
