MONTEREY — Baskets were at a premium Saturday at the Monterey High School tournament, but the Cathedral Lady Wave were able to find the bottom of the net just enough to edge the Lady Wolves of Monterey, 37-32.

“Both teams played very good defense,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “We just had to be patient and willing to accept it wasn’t always going to be up-tempo. You have to be willing to grind games out and get the mindset that it is OK to be patient.”

Grayson Bryant led the Lady Wave with 11 points in the win. Natalie Fletcher added eight of her own and Elizabeth Smith finished with seven points and 15 rebounds.

The win pushed Cathedral to 4-2 this season, but Arnold said his team is still quite a ways from where they want to be.

“We are still a work in progress,” he said. “That is why it is important to win these games because success breeds more success and it is a lot easier to stay positive. It is hard to get kids to buy into doing work required to win if you aren’t winning. But, when you are winning, you are seeing the fruits of the labor.”

Cathedral (boys) 46, Monterey 33

MONTEREY — Cathedral’s Derrion Batieste scored a game-high 15 points and Jardarius Anderson added eight, as the Green Wave rolled past Monterey, 46-33.

“I told (Batieste) after the game it was his best game he’s had in three years of being on the varsity team,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “He was just patient. He didn’t take any bad shots and was 6-for-9 shooting, which is very efficient.”

Arnold said Batieste is lethal when he is open.

“When he gets open, he’s going to knock it down,” Arnold said. “Good shooters don’t think any shots aren’t good.”

The Green Wave also stepped up on the defensive end not allowing Monterey to score in double-digits in any quarter.

With the win, Cathedral improves to 4-2 this season.

Bastrop 59, Ferriday 57

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Down a point with 15 seconds to go in the game, Ferriday was eyeing a chance to go to 5-0 on the season.

However, the Trojans were unable to find the bottom of the net, and ultimately fell to Bastrop High in the Tensas High tournament, 59-57.

“We had opportunities with 15 seconds and missed our chance to go ahead,” Ferriday head coach K.G. Watkins said. “We just couldn’t capitalize. We should have made things happen.”

Ferriday trailed 36-27 at halftime, but the Trojans were able to get back in the game with a strong third quarter showing, outscoring Bastrop 16-9.

“We changed defensive sets and put some kids on their stronger players who had broken free in the first half,” Watkins said. “We also wanted to do better with ball protection and not force as much.”

But early struggles ultimately doomed the Trojans.

“We came out and made a lot of mistakes early,” Watkins said. “We’re still getting our basketball legs under us. It is just our fifth game and it is still early in the season. We’ll get things together.”

Ronald Davis was the leading scorer for Ferriday with 16 points, followed by Dantrieze Scott who had 11 points and Carlos Collins who recorded 10.

For Bastrop, Mark Moore led the way with 14 points.

“We aren’t where we want to be, but we are getting there,” Watkins said. “It is a growing process, but we are using these opportunities before district as a good thing.”

Tensas High (boys) 65, Vidalia 47

ST. JOSEPH, La. — A slow start put Vidalia High in a tough position Saturday against Tensas High, and it proved to be a position the Vikings couldn’t fight back from, falling 65-47.

“Our outside shots weren’t falling and we couldn’t get too much going inside,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. “We had open looks, but they just didn’t fall.”

Demarco Brown led Vidalia with 15 points and teammate Malik Jefferson added nine.

For Tensas, Lamonte Bass scored a game-high 22 points and Grant Jackson added 19.

“We played our basic 1-2-2 defense and just didn’t rotate well,” Sanders said. “They scored on a lot of drives as well as three-point shots.”

The loss dropped the Vikings to 2-5 this season.
