FAYETTE — Even after an upset win against the two-time defending Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A state champions, Antrell Gales didn’t have much to say.

Instead, the Jefferson County sophomore let her performance on the court do the talking.

“Antrell is a shy young lady,” Jefferson County head coach Flora McKnight said. “But she has so much potential.”

Gales scored 25 points in the win, but was quick to turn the attention off of her.

“I just had to help my teammates out,” she said. “They were double-teaming Diamond (Smith) most of the game, so that just left me open.”

Gales has been helping her team quite a bit despite just being in her second year of varsity action.

So far this season, Gales is averaging 15 points per game, helping Jefferson County to a 5-1 record.

Her production was about the same last year, and the team’s results benefitted, as Jefferson County advanced to the MHSAA Class 3A semifinals in the Mississippi Coliseum.

Now, with some experience under her belt, Gales has been able to settle in. However, McKnight is expecting even more from her as time progresses.

“She’s got good hands and going to get even taller,” McKnight said. “There is no telling what she can be or how good she can be two years from now. She is just a sophomore and I can’t say enough about her.”

But for Gales, her work on the court isn’t about individual accomplishments, it is about helping the Lady Tigers achieve their goal of getting back to the coliseum and finishing what they started.

“I’m just trying to help my teammates out however I can,” Gales said. “I just try to create second chances by crashing the boards and making baskets.”
