WOODVILLE — Travion Jones led a balanced scoring attack for Wilkinson County High School with 17 points and LaHendric Bruster contributed with 13 points as the Wildcats defeated the South Pike Eagles 65-52 Tuesday night.
Wilkinson County got off to a sluggish start and trailed South Pike 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. Then the Wildcats got rolling on both ends of the court in the second quarter, which led to a 19-8 advantage and a 30-23 halftime lead over the Eagles.
“It was a complete win from the starters to the bench players,” Wildcats head coach Julius Anderson said. “A lot of missed calls that made the score as close (as it was).”
The third quarter was more of the same as Wilkinson County put up 16 points while holding South Pike to just 10 points for a 47-33 lead. The Eagles finally got going offensively in the fourth quarter as they put up 19 points. Unfortunately for them, so did the Wildcats.
“The bench players came in and gave us a spark. Our starters came in and finished them off in the fourth quarter,” Anderson said. “We shared the ball real well. We were able to break down their press. We had good communication and it looks like it’s going to be a great season for us.”
Juntavious Cage finished with 11 points, Desmond Hunter added nine points, and Ja’Quorias Stewart poured in eight points for the home team.
Wilkinson County (7-2) plays host to Trinity Episcopal at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Ferriday 57, Franklin Parish 45
WINNSBORO, La. — The Ferriday High School Trojans went on a tear in the second and third quarters as they went on to defeat the Franklin Parish High School Patriots 57-45 Tuesday night.
A low-scoring first quarter ended with Franklin Parish leading Ferriday 9-8. That lead did not last very long as the Trojans outscored the Patriots 12-4 in the second quarter for a 20-13 halftime lead and then 18-8 in the third quarter for a commanding 38-21 lead.
The Patriots were able to put up 24 points in the fourth quarter, but could not make enough stops to get back in the game. The Trojans scored 19 points in that quarter.
Ferriday (6-2) will go up against Sicily Island at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ferriday Tournament.
