JONESVILLE — Block appeared well on its way to an easy win over the Ferriday Trojans Friday night after jumping out to a 25-11 lead.

However, Ferriday would have other ideas as the Trojans ramped up their defense and emerged with a 58-48 win.

“We weren’t focused when we came out,” Ferriday head coach K.G. Watkins said. “I’m happy we did that because it taught our players that you have to play focused for four quarters.”

The Trojans started their comeback in the second quarter as they put up 14 points while holding Block to just four points. The third quarter was more of the same with Ferriday scoring 15 points while the Bears managed only six points and trailed the Trojans 40-35.

“We went back to playing fundamental basketball. Playing great defense. We came back and played our offense,” Watkins said. “We made a few adjustments, but nothing major. We just settled down and played more focused.”

Marquell Griffin and Ronald Williams led the Trojans with 15 points each. A.J. Barber had a game-high 18 points to lead the Bears.

Ferriday (10-4) plays at General Trass at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Meanwhile Block plays at LaSalle at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Brookhaven 51,

Natchez High 46

NATCHEZ — Just when it seemed that Natchez High had Brookhaven on the ropes, the Panthers responded with a big fourth quarter that propelled the No. 1 team in MHSAA Class 5A to a 51-46 win over the upset-minded Bulldogs Friday night in Region 6-5A play.

Natchez rallied from a 24-12 deficit at the end of the first quarter to take a 41-40 lead at the end of the third quarter. Yet the Bulldogs could not keep the momentum going as the Panthers outscored them 11-5 in the fourth quarter.

Jadarrious Ivory led the Bulldogs with 20 points and TyRan Newman chipped in with 14 points. Lazorian Mcnulty led the Panthers with 15 points and Damarius Brooks added 13 points.

Natchez High (6-9, 0-1) next plays at Wingfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

Trinity Episcopal 63,

Amite School Center 57

LIBERTY — Dee Fleming led Trinity Episcopal with 21 points and David Jackson scored 16 points as the Saints held off a fourth-quarter rally by Amite School Center to win 63-57 in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

The Saints jumped out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter of play, but the Rebels cut into their lead in the second quarter to go into halftime down 31-25. Trinity Episcopal appeared to have the game in hand after an 18-10 advantage in the third quarter.

Yet Amite School Center would not go away. The problem for the Rebels was they just ran out of time.
