Girls roundup: Ferriday girls’ comeback falls short, 55-47

FERRIDAY — The Ferriday Lady Trojans attempted to overcome several costly mistakes with a fourth-quarter comeback, but fell short to Sterlington 55-47 Tuesday night.
Ferriday also had trouble slowing down, Sterlington’s Kalela Mullins who led all scorers with 18 points. Camesha Gray chipped for the Lady Panthers with 16 points, who remain undefeated in district play.
“We committed a lot of turnovers at crucial times,” Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. “We stayed in it for three quarters, and e played with a lot of energy. Mullins got a lot of easy buckets in transition, and we didn’t challenge her enough.”
The Lady Panthers took control of the game by outscoring Ferriday 17-11 in the second quarter and 15-9 in the third quarter for a 47-32 lead.
“At one point we were down by 20 points,” Abron said. “In the third quarter, we were down by 17 points. We made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, but we just ran out of time.”
Shaniqua Hillard scored 15 points and Anasia Turner finished with 12 points.
Ferriday (6-12, 1-1) plays at 6 p.m. Friday at Mangham.
Trinity Episcopal 79, WCCA 16
WOODVILLE — D’Asia Mitchell led Trinity Episcopal with 22 points and Sloane Young added 20 points as the Lady Saints cruised to a 79-16 win over Wilkinson County Christian Academy Tuesday night in MAIS District 5-AA action.
Jasmine Ivory scored 17 points and Tali Beard had 13 points for the Lady Saints.
Trinity Episcopal (16-5, 5-0) plays Friday at Franklin Academy. WCCA (no records available) will also be on the road Friday when they take on Clinton Christian.
Columbia Academy 50, ACCS 40
COLUMBIA — Adams County Christian School had no answer for Columbia Academy’s duo of Miranda Magee and Madison McDaniel, who combined for 34 points in the Lady Cougars’ 50-40 win in a pivotal MAIS District 4-AAA game.
Magee led all scorers with 21 points, including one 3-pointer, while McDaniel finished with 13 points.
“They zoned us. They had more pep in their step than we did,” ACCS coach Melanie Hall said. “We just didn’t play well as a team. Columbia Academy outplayed us.”
Bailey Boyd was the only ACCS player to score in double figures with 18 points.
ACCS (18-6, 6-2) hosts Simpson Academy Friday.
Jefferson County 54, Hazlehurst 26
FAYETTE — Diamond Smith had game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Kailyn Hammett dished out 12 assists as Jefferson County beat Hazlehurst 54-26 in MHSAA Region 7-3A action Tuesday night.
Led by Smith, Hammett, and Antrell Gales, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and then had a 29-11 advantage at halftime. Gales ended up with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Jefferson County (14-3, 3-0) plays host to Wilkinson County Friday.
Monterey 33, Grace Christian 21
MONTEREY — Sydney Woodruff led Monterey with a game-high 10 points as the Lady Wolves overcame a slow start to defeat Grace Christian 33-21 in an LHSAA District 5-B game Tuesday night.
Monterey went into halftime leading just 12-11 before outscoring Grace Christian 15-4 in the decisive third quarter for a 27-15 lead.
Bailey Book and Meredith Chatman each scored seven points apiece for the Lady Wolves.
Monterey (16-8, 3-0) plays at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Avoyelles Charter School.
Peabody 109, Vidalia 21
VIDALIA — Shanekra Laneheart torched the Vidalia Lady Vikings with 41 points, and she got more than enough help from her teammates in leading Peabody to a 109-21 win in an LHSAA District 3-3A game Tuesday night.
By the time the first quarter was over, Peabody led Vidalia 43-5.
Demetrion Jones and A’Zia Reed contributed for Peabody with 22 points apiece. The Lady Vikings were led by Jalyn Smith 11 points, and Angel Heckard had six points.
Vidalia (7-12, 1-6) plays host Friday to Avoyelles.
Montgomery 60, Block 32
MONTGOMERY, La. — Kayla Trisler led Montgomery with a game-high 19 points and Kelsey Scroggs added 11 points as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 60-32 win over the Block.
LaKisica Bowman led the Lady Bears with nine points and Aziyah Anderson chipped in with eight points.
Block (9-8, 2-1) hosts Logansport Friday.
