NATCHEZ — Kirdis Clark led Natchez High with a game-high 19 points and Skylar Morgan added 12 as the Lady Bulldogs rolled past Brookhaven High 60-37 Friday night in an MHSAA Region 6-5A game.

Natchez High came out somewhat flat in the early minutes of the game and trailed Brookhaven 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. Then the Lady Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure, and that led to a 22-3 advantage in the second quarter for a 31-15 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs made sure that the Lady Panthers would not mount a comeback with a 15-8 third-quarter edge

Destiny Lyles poured in nine points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Natchez High (14-7, 3-1) plays host Tuesday to Provine.

Monterey 38, Oak Hill 18

MONTEREY — After getting off to a slow start, Monterey seized the momentum from Oak Hill in the second quarter and kept it in the second half as it notched a 38-18 win in LHSAA District 5-B action Friday night.

The first quarter was a defensive battle more than it was open shots not falling for both teams. Oak Hill wound up with the lead at the end of the quarter, 3-2, but Monterey did not panic.

“Both teams played some really good defense in the first quarter. It was intense,” Lady Wolves head coach Cary Shivley said. “Sometime during the second quarter (we grabbed control).”

Monterey outscored Oak Hill 12-5 to take a 14-8 lead into halftime. After both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, the Lady Wolves put the game away with an emphatic 17-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.

“We normally play better in the second half, and that was true (Friday),” Shivley said. “We kind of got going in the second quarter and that carried over into the second half.”

Mary Chatman led the Lady Wolves with a game-high 13 points while Sydney Woodruff had nine points and Bailey Book added eight points. Shivley added that the win was a total team effort.

“We played well tonight even though we didn’t have our point guard (Kailyn Hammet),” McKnight said. “But we still got our transition game going.”
