The Tigers were led offensively by Wyatt Brabham, who recorded two hits and knocked in two runs.

Monterey 13, Block 3

MONTEREY — Caden Poole limited Block High School to just four hits and Jake Barlow hit a key home run in the bottom of the third inning as the Monterey High School Wolves defeated the Bears 13-3 in five innings Friday afternoon at the Monterey Tournament.

Monterey head coach Eric Richard was pleased both with Poole’s outing on the mound, and the defense behind him.

“Caden has gotten better every time he’s out (there). He was poised (Friday). He threw a lot of strikes. He was able to locate a little bit. He only had one or two strikeouts, but we played good defense behind him,” Richard said. “It was a good team win, but it starts with Caden throwing strikes.”

Monterey had a 3-0 lead after two innings of play before Block answered with two runs in the top of the third inning. That rally was short-lived as the Wolves scored five runs in the bottom of the third to go up 8-2. The big hit was Barlow’s grand-slam home run.

“We finally got some practices in. (Friday), we were more consistent. Even the outs were productive outs,” Richard said. “We scored three runs on sacrifice flies and another run scored on a groundout. That’s because we had runners in scoring position.”

Ronnie Littleton was charged with the loss on the mound for the Bears.

Block (2-4) plays at 11 a.m. today against Vidalia, and Monterey (1-2) plays at 5 p.m. today against St. Joseph (Plaucheville).

RAYVILLE, La. — After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Drake Smith pitched four straight scoreless innings to lead the Delta Charter School Storm to a 12-2 win over the Family Community Christian School Warriors in five innings Friday afternoon at the Richland State Bank Hornet Invitational.

Smith allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked three in five innings. He also went 2-for-3 with a double and one run batted in.

“Drake kept us in it. He got ahead of some hitters. He got to work some counts, and the defense responded,” Storm head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said.

Smith got plenty of run support. Delta Charter took the lead for good with a three-run rally in the bottom of the second inning and put up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

“We finally played a solid game from beginning to end. The last few games we’ve struggled a little bit. The guys played well,” Hoffpauir said.

Lee Lancaster went 2-for-3 with a triple. Trenton Miller was 2-for-3 with a double, and Freddie Mango drove in two runs. Delta Charter (2-4) plays at 5:30 p.m. today against tournament host Rayville High School.
