NATCHEZ — The FBI is investigating the death of an Adams County Correctional Center inmate Friday afternoon as a homicide.
Luis Carrasco-Cortez, 55, was found on the floor of his cell after returning from a common area according to a report from the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
Adams County Coroner James E. Lee Sr. said the victim died at 12:43 p.m. Friday from blunt force trauma and probable asphyxiation consistent with someone pressing on the victim’s airway.
Carrasco-Cortez suffered a dislocation fracture of the jawbone, rib fractures, and bleeding in his brain.
The news release from the coroner’s office reports that prison officials suspect the victim “might have been in an altercation.”
Lee said he did not understand how the victim’s injuries could have happened without officials knowing.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said he has been informed of the incident, but the FBI investigates crimes that occur within the prison.
“(The warden) is probably with the FBI investigators as we speak,” Patten said Monday afternoon.
Adams County Correctional Center is owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America.
