“It’s pretty exciting,” Woods said. “It’s something that you always wish for as a little kid.”

Woods will officially start at Mississippi College in the fall, while Calcote said he will begin summer classes in the summer to get an early start on school and some early reps with the team.

Calcote said, along with the zeal of a Division I program, Alcorn State golf coach Andrew MacBean peaked his interest on a personal visit. Calcote will not be the only Natchez native on the golf team at Alcorn State. Senior Royal Hill III and freshman Rondall Hawkins, Jr., are fromer Natchez High School golfers.

“I just liked the coaches (at Alcorn State),” Calcote said. “(MacBean) came to talk to me and he really got me interested with some of the stuff he was saying about the golf team and the players that go there. It’s pretty exciting.”

There will be a familiar face attending Mississippi College with Woods; his teammate at ACCS Sam Butler will also be his teammate at Mississippi College. Butler’s announcement ceremony was less than one month ago.

Woods said after a conversation with his family, he talked things over with his teammate, and now the two former Rebels will start their first year of college on the same campus.

“Sam and I sat down and talked about it,” Woods said. “I’m just excited right now.”

Both Woods and Calcote are multi-sport athletes. Woods plays soccer for ACCS in the offseason, and Calcote serves as pitcher for the ACCS baseball team.

Calcote said his primary focus has been on golf — he left for a tournament Thursday after the signing. Calcote said until he heads to Alcorn State in the summer, he is focused on baseball and honing his skills on the course.

“I’m really focused on golf more than the other sports,” he said. “Not saying that I don’t like any of those, but there’s just something about golf … I still have a lot of stuff to work on, but it’ll be fun.”
