NATCHEZ — Things haven’t gone quite as planned this season for the Natchez High School softball team.

Slated to play for their home game on March 14, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t take to their home turf until an April 4 game against McComb High School.

But that hasn’t deterred senior Taylor Fry from making the most of her opportunities in her final campaign.

“It’s been difficult, but the few games that we did get in that didn’t get rained out, I feel really good about.”

Fry said while she wishes her squad would have been able to play more games, the second baseman can’t complain about the overall results so far.

“It hasn’t been too much of a disappointment,” Fry said. “The two games that we did get to play (and win), they were very exciting and I was really proud of the team. But with the rain, we didn’t get to play as many games in the regular season as we would have liked to, but it’s still been a good season.”

This past week, Natchez saw its most action on the diamond this season as it played host to three games, winning two of those matchups by a combined 35-15.

“We’ve been playing well our last few games,” Fry said. “The varsity and junior varsity teams, we’ve been playing well and winning.”

Fry has been a fixture in the Natchez lineup since her sophomore season, and coach Bonita Hamilton said there is not a more reliable player on the roster

“She’s a very strong player,” Hamilton said. “She’s a very good defensive player, and that’s what I like about her, she stays focused. She never gets rattled. I can depend on her, -and she’s a dependable player.”

Hamilton noted not only can she rely on Fry on the field, but away from it as well as she grooms the younger players.

“She doesn’t do too much talking, but her defense backs up her talking,” Hamilton said. “She’s just a team-player, and I can depend on her to get the job done anytime. I can always count on her.”

Fry said she tries to provide leadership by her actions and playing the game the right way to help set a positive example for the younger players.

“Our team is mostly younger girls,” Fry said. “So I just try to go on the field and do what I’m supposed to do to give them something to work toward.

While Fry is relishing every opportunity she has to suit up for the Natchez Blue and Gold, she also has one eye focused on the next chapter of her life, where she plans to attend Jackson State University in the fall.

“I’m going to have a lot of memories of Natchez from the different sports that I played here,” Fry said.

Fry plans on serving as a member of the Lady Tiger cheer squad while studying forensic psychology.
