NATCHEZ — Rain couldn’t keep the 7- and 8-year-old Dixie Youth Baseball teams off the field Thursday afternoon.
Team Atkins Lumber jumped out to an early lead against Team Subway to clinch a 6-5 win in four innings.
“We tell our guys to wait on a good pitch and drive the ball,” Atkins Lumber coach Lance Prather said. “All of our players have been playing extremely well defensively,”
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the second inning, Atkins Lumber scored two runs in the second inning to take a two-run advantage.
Subway prevented more runs in the top the third inning from a sharp defensive play from third baseman Mason Bouldin. Bouldin fielded a ground ball and threw it across the diamond to get the second out at first.
Down 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Bouldin made another snazzy play to cut Atkins Lumber’s rally short by fielding a ground ball and throwing the lead runner out at second.
Subway fought back in the bottom of the fourth inning. The team rallied to score three runs in that frame. With two outs and the winning run at the plate, Jack Stubbs caught a popup that ended the game and earned a win for Atkins Lumber.
Stubbs said he made the play sticking to the basics, watching the ball into his mitt.
“I focused on the ball,“ Stubbs said.
Stubbs had two hits one in the first inning and one in the second inning.
“When (Prather) winds up, lean backwards on your back foot and when the ball is two feet away from you, swing.”
