INDIANOLA — Cathedral High School got contributions throughout its lineup and Sam Parker pitched six strong innings as the Green Wave defeated the Indianola Academy Colonels 9-6 Tuesday afternoon to take Game 1 of this MAIS Class AAA state semifinal series.

Seven players for Cathedral had at least one hit and five of those seven ended up with two hits. Andrew Beesley, Jacob Jenkins and Pate Shirley each went 2-for-3. Jenkins had a double and drove in one run. Shirley also drove in one run. Zach Flattmann homered and went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Craig Bradley was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

“I thought we swung the bats pretty well tonight. We had 12 hits. We had several players with multiple hits,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “I would have liked for us to finish the game off earlier.”

The game was scoreless after two innings of play before the Green Wave scored one run in the top of the third inning. They added three runs in the top of the fourth inning, one run in the top of the fifth and two runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-0 lead before the Colonels scored one run in the bottom of the sixth.

That was the only run Indianola Academy would score against Parker, who held the Colonels to just four hits, struck out seven batters and walked four.

“His pitch count got up. We had a 9-1 lead at the time,” Beesley said. Cathedral scored twice in the top of the seventh.

Pate Shirley went just two-thirds of an inning and he got rocked to the tune of five runs, all earned, on just two hits. One of those hits was a three-run home run by Wesley Lester.

Gabe Smith came on to finish the game, but he made things interesting by walking the first two batters he faced before finally getting the final out.

“We gave up some big hits. Too many free bases,” Beesley said about what happened in the bottom of the seventh.”

The Green Wave advanced to the semifinals after defeating Heritage Academy 2-0 in the quarterfinals last week.

With the win, Cathedral (22-3) extended its winning streak to 16 games. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will take place at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Chester Willis Field. Indianola must beat Cathedral to force a Game, which it wouuld take place approximately 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
