RIDGELAND — Two Adams County Christian School standouts are just two wins away from claiming state championships, tennis coach Jim Bob Allgood said his players are more than ready for the challenge.

Brody Cole and Sneh Patel are set to compete in the MAIS AAA tennis state championships in Ridgeland today.

Cole’s first match is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m., while Patel’s opening match is slated for a noon start.

Despite having full confidence in his two standouts, Allgood was quick to note it will be a strong accomplishment for his duo to make their way through their respective brackets.

“Every year when we get to state championship, most of the kids there are very good tennis players,” Allgood said.

Patel advanced to today’s action after finishing second in the South State meet last week in Laurel. Patel fell to Laurel Christian’s Daniel Taneous 1-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the boys No. 2 finals. Patel also fell to Taneous in the district championship two weeks ago, and Allgood said there is a good chance the two could square off again in the state championship match. The Rebels head man, however, said he feels perhaps the outcome may be different this time around.

“The first outing he was playing too fast, and the second time he was playing too slow,” Allgood said. “He’s going to it have to get to the net by the third (volley) and put (the point) away.”

Cole, meanwhile, enters today’s action fresh off district and South State championships. But Cole’s accomplishments didn’t come without some adversity.

The senior right-hander trailed Laurel Christian’s Turner Hughes 3-0 in the first, but roared back to win 6-4, 6-0.

“Brody showed tremendous heart and soul to come back last week,” Allgood said. “He has so much confidence right now, he thinks he probably thinks he could bat cleanup for the (Mississippi) Braves.”
