RIDGELAND — Cathedral High School’s No. 2 girls doubles team won an individual state title at the MAIS AAA state tournament Wednesday in Ridgeland.
The Green Wave tandem Marty Lewis and Emma Hogue beat Taylor Chewning and Ashley Jarratt of St. Aloysius 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in the finals. Cathedral’s No. 2 pair fought back from three match points and were down 5-2 in the third set before coming back to win.
Lewis and Hogue beat Manchester Academy’s Mary Sibley McGraw and Nettie Barbour in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Cathedral’s No. 1 girls doubles pair fell just short of a state title in a third-set tiebreaker.
Cathedral placed second overall in the state tournament to St. Joseph High School.
“I’m super proud of these players,” coach Beth Foster said. “They came against some very hard competition — the north seems to have a very strong tennis influence. They gave 105 percent on the court and never gave up, especially in the last two matches in the finals.”
