NATCHEZ — Five Louisiana residents were arrested Saturday morning following a high-risk raid on a Natchez motel.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Natchez motel and arrested five people, including Arthur Freeman, 28, of Jonesboro, La., who is accused of attempted murder in St. Martinville, La.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said he received a call from St. Martinville Chief of Police Calder Herbert at approximately 9 p.m. Friday, who advised Patten five suspects connected with the shooting fled his jurisdiction earlier that day.

Patten said Herbert advised him cell phone tracking suggested the suspects could be at the Excellent Inn and Suites on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.

Patten said he was near the location, so he drove into the parking lot of the hotel and saw a vehicle matching the description provided to him by Herbert —a red 2001 Honda Accord.

“The chief told me, ‘Do not approach these guys alone or with just two or three deputies.’” Patten said.

Sheriff Patten said he called in additional units and a special response team that was able to respond to the hotel in 15 minutes.

After several hours of surveillance, Patten said deputies stormed the hotel room just after midnight Saturday morning and arrested the five suspects. Deputies also recovered three pistols, one of which St. Martinville Police confirmed Saturday was used in the shooting.

The handgun connected with the shooting, a .38-cal. revolver, was found loaded and cocked, Patten said.

St. Martinville Police charged Jefferey Malveau, 31, of St. Martinville, with possession of a weapon by a felon and obstruction of justice. Brien Wings, 26, of Franklin, La., Dawn Melancon, 40, of St. Martinville and Ashley Seaux, 30, of St. Martinville were charged with obstruction of justice.

Patten described the arrests as a high-risk situation, and said he was glad no one was injured.

“We were able to apprehend (the suspects) without any injuries sustained to officers, public, or themselves,” Patten said.

St. Martinville Police reported Freeman was charged with attempted second degree murder in connection with the shooting of Mike Zeno Friday afternoon at the intersection of Port and LaSalle streets in St. Martinville.

The police reported Zeno was able to drive himself to a nearby police station for assistance and provided officers with a description of the suspect’s vehicle while waiting for an ambulance.

SMPD’s investigation led to the motel in Natchez, the police reported.

Patten said he was informed Saturday Zeno was in stable condition.

Adams County deputies also found cocaine and methamphetamine on Freeman, Patten said. Deputies also discovered another warrant issued for Freeman in Baton Rouge.

“We’re letting him go answer for his attempted murder charge first,” Patten said. “And then if they allow him to make bond, he’s more than likely going to be (charged) here for the cocaine and crystal meth, and then he’ll bounce around to Baton Rouge.”

Herbert said his department is grateful for the support by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

“Sheriff Patten and I spoke multiple times to coordinate information and his team executed the arrests just prior to our arrival,” Herbert said. “Once on scene, our officers were treated professionally and given use of the facilities for interviews and processing documents.”

Patten said his team did an outstanding job and he was proud of his office.

“This isn’t the place you want to be if you’re screwing up, and that shows it,” he said. “They probably won’t cross the line in Adams County again after last night.”
