NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department has some new wheels patrolling the city’s streets.

Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said the department acquired six 2016 Dodge Chargers in May, which are now hitting the streets as they are outfitted with new radios.

Some cars are still awaiting license plates, White said. The vehicles were paid through the department’s budget.

“We purchased four (vehicles) in 2013,” White said. “(That) was the last time we bought a new car.”

NPD Patrol Officer Carell Singleton said he’s excited to be one of the officers driving a Charger.

Singleton, who has been with the NPD for 10 years, said he drives one of the Chargers operating during his shift.

“It’s just beautiful,” Singleton said. “I like the style of it, of course, but it rides smoother. Way smoother.”

The differences are more than just aesthetic, Singleton said. The new vehicles make his job easier and more comfortable.

“It’s got way more room, and more room in the backseat, and that’s a real good thing,” he said. “It has one button that cuts on all your lights, even your taillights and your headlights. It runs quieter, and I like that.”
