Good luck to new leaders across area

Today marks a new era in local government across the area. Four new mayors will raise their hands and take the oath of office in ceremonies from Natchez to Clayton.

We urge the new municipal executives to remember a few key things that, when used to help them govern, should result in an improved local government.

First, be honest. This goes without saying, but all too often politicians get caught in the trap of saying partial truths rather than the unvarnished facts. Rather than worry about hurting feelings, the best leaders deliver the facts as they are without doublespeak or half-truths.

Second, remember who the bosses are — the people. No complaint or public citizens’ gripe or question is too small to be taken seriously and with the utmost respect. We’ve seen on too many occasions how politicians get comfortable in office and begin to take their positions for granted. Often that results in air of arrogance that can quickly be read by Joe Citizen. It’s what gets incumbents ousted as well.

Listen. All too often people in elected positions tend to talk twice as much as they listen, when most of the time, the reverse is in order. An informed leader is a good leader.

Finally, remember that you cannot make us all happy, but if you are honest, trust your gut in making tough decisions, the majority of citizens will respect you and follow your leadership.

Good luck.
