CLAYTON, Mo. — Services for the Right Rev. Edward Lloyd Salmon Jr., 82, who died Wednesday, June 29, 2016, after a lengthy battle with cancer, will be 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016, at The Church of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton, Mo.
Born Jan. 30, 1934, in Natchez, he was the son of Edward Lloyd Salmon Sr. and Helen Bernice Burley Salmon.
Salmon was a graduate of Natchez High School, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of the South and Virginia Theological Seminary, was rector of a number of parishes in Northeast Arkansas, assistant rector and then rector of St. Paul’s Church in Fayetteville, Ark., and accepted a call as rector of The Church of St. Michael and St. George in Clayton in 1978, where he served for 10 years.
He was elected 13th Bishop of South Carolina in 1989 and served in the episcopate until his retirement in 2008. He came out of retirement to serve as the interim dean of Nashotah House Theological Seminary, in Nashotah, Wis., then moved to Chevy Chase, Md., to become the interim rector of All Saints’ Church. From there he returned to Nashotah House and became the 19th dean and president, retiring from that position in January 2015. During his 55 years in ordained ministry, he served on and led a number of boards, including: Kanuga Camp and Conference Center; Sewanee: The University of the South; Nashotah House Theological Seminary; and The Anglican Digest.
Salmon was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter Thomas Salmon of Natchez.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Louise Hack Salmon; one daughter, Catherine Stattman Salmon of St. Louis; one son, Edward Lloyd Salmon III and wife, Theresa Reynolds Salmon of The Woodlands, Texas; one sister, Sarah Evelyn Salmon of Natchez; one sister-in-law, Virginia Sartin Salmon of Natchez; three grandchildren, Fiona Louise Salmon, Celia Jean Salmon and Edward Lloyd Salmon IV of The Woodlands; one niece, Amelia Virginia Salmon and husband, William Benjamin Hillyer of Natchez; one nephew, the Rev. Walter Burley Stattmann Salmon and husband, Robert Christopher Jacob Henkel of Palm Beach, Fla., and Lexington, Ga.; and one great-nephew, Gibson Thomas Salmon Hillyer of Natchez.
