The Winnsboro All-Stars struck for one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to outlast the Ferriday Fear 3-2 in the Belles Division of the Dixie Girls Softball tournament at Delta Charter School.
Ferriday had its chances to secure a win, perhaps its best opportunity came in the top of the seventh when it put the first two runners on base, but were unable to score any runs.
“We got plenty on base, but we just didn’t get the hits that we needed,” Ferriday coach Jennie Beach said. “They out-hit us, and that’s the name of the game … I could have bunted a couple of times, but had my big sticks up, and I was expecting big hits. Throughout the whole game, we had runners on base, so we just didn’t get the hits.”
To Beach’s point, the Fear stranded six runners on base combined in the last three frames.
“There were several times we were supposed that we didn’t execute,” Beach said.
Winnsboro jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the early stages of the game, but Ferriday went ahead in the fifth after a two-run rally. Sarah Jane Gray and Peyton Roberson each knocked in runs with base hits that put their squad on top.
However, Winnsboro responded in the bottom of the fifth with a single run of its own to tie the game.
Ferriday now heads to the loser’s bracket of the tournament and will attempt to stave off elimination at 6 p.m. today when it plays Mangum.
“We’ve been there, done that,” Beach said. “It’s all good. There is not a person on this team that hasn’t had to come back through the loser’s bracket. We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing — work on our small game — and look for those hits when we’ve got runners on base.”
