Sabine gets past Concordia in opener

Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Concordia 11-year-old All-Stars Friday at the Dixie Youth state tournament.

Backed by a pair of strong pitching performances and a 14-run second inning, the Sabine All-Stars won in 2.5 innings, run-ruling Concordia 20-0 in each team’s tournament opener.

“We’ve been playing at 50-foot (pitching rubber to home plate) all season long, and this tournament is 46-foot,” Concordia coach Carter Austin said. “Our timing was off at the plate, and we didn’t make the adjustments we needed to make to hit the ball. The team just got down and couldn’t come back.”

Sabine starter Brenyn Ebarb was in complete command as the right-hander struck out the six batters he faced.

Jacob Hungerford led Sabine with two base hits, driving in four of his team’s runs.

Sabine struck for six runs in the first inning, but only managed four hits in the frame. Concordia committed two errors and walked two batters that aided the Sabine rally.

In the second, Concordia walked four batters, including the first two batters of the frame, and had one hitbatsman that helped fuel the Sabine rally.

Ian McCready, Jacob Moore and Brandon Tiffee all reached base safely for Concordia.

Concordia will attempt to reverse its fortune today and is slated to play at noon against Monroe and at 4 p.m. against Moss Bluff.

“I want to see adjustments made at the plate and in the field,” Carter said. “I also want to see more effort.”
