Two pivotal Vidalia errors in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed Eastbank to push across the winning run in a come-from-behind emotional win at the tournament final of the Little League Louisiana State Tournament.
The Vidalia 12-and-under All-Stars appeared poised to claim the state championship as it headed to the sixth inning clinging to a 2-1 advantage. Eastbank, however, managed to push a run across off a wild pitch, sending the game into extra innings.
“I am very proud of them,” Vidalia coach Randi Poole said. “I couldn’t ask for better girls. They played great.”
Eastbank came within an arm’s reach of winning the game on that play, but catcher Lauren Dunbar fired a strike to pitcher Jessica White to nip the potential winning run at home plate.
Vidalia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Madison Green laced a run-scoring single to center field. The all-stars went ahead 2-0 in the fourth following an RBI hit by White.
However, Vidalia was unable to cash in any further, as it left at least one runner on base in the final three frames.
“We just couldn’t seem to get any more runs,” Poole said. “They had good defense.”
White was dominant through the first five innings as the right-handed hurler struck out three batters, allowed just two hits and zero earned runs.
Green led Vidalia with three hits and also stole a base in the crushing loss.
“I told them not to hang their heads,” Poole said. “They played great. It just happened. I couldn’t really say much because I was crying.”
Vidalia forced the pivotal game with a nail-biting 4-3 win earlier in the day.
Vidalia entered the top of the sixth clinging to a 4-0 advantage, but a late Eastbank rally made things interesting.
Eastbank scored three runs and had two runners in scoring position with only one out.
White took over for starter Addison Jackson and managed to get the next two batters out to give her team the win and force a decisive final game.
Jackson cruised through five innings, allowing just one hit before running into trouble in the sixth.
“Jackson did a great job, and so did (White),” Poole said.
Maddilyn Shows drove in Vidalia’s first run in the second with a single. The all-stars then scored three more in the fourth, highlighted by Green’s run-scoring hit.
The all-stars lost their opener in the tournament to Eastbank, but battled back to win the next three to reach the championship game. Poole said she couldn’t be more pleased with her team’s effort throughout the tournament.
“There is always next year,” Poole said. “They’ll be back. They’re a great group of girls. They have a lot of chemistry together. We lost that first game, and we came back to the championship. You couldn’t ask for anything better.”
