Jackson Wedgeworth had a special surprise as he walked off the 18th green at Duncan Park course Tuesday afternoon.

Duncan Park Golf Course Superintendent Greg Brooking informed the Soso native that not only had he won the Norman Puckett Junior Golf Championship at Duncan Park, but he would also take home a brand new Taylormade M-2 driver after shooting below par for the tournament.

“It’s a pretty good feeling. I’ve been needing a driver,” Wedgeworth said. “My main goal was just hitting the fairways — hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens, and eventually some putts will fall.”

Wedgeworth shot a 70 on Monday and followed it up with a 69 Tuesday to claim the top honor at the tournament.

“It’s a good course,” Wedgeworth said. “I like playing it. And there’s good people running it. It really helps you hit it straight. If it’s just a little off line, then you’re making a big number.”

Meanwhile, on the girls side, Kayla Starr put the memory of shooting a 109 on Monday behind her to bounce back to register a 90 on Tuesday, giving her Tuesday’s top score and a third-place finish.

“I hit the ball a lot better, and my putting was a lot better,” Starr said. “I’ve been playing on this golf course a lot now, and it was really fun.”

The Cathedral School standout plays on two tours, Arrowhead and U.S. Kids tours, and added she thinks the two-day event will go a long ways in achieving her goals of someday being a professional golfer.

“I’m trying to work as hard as I can to go as far as I can,” she said.

The 14 year old said she has only been playing golf competitively since February, and Tuesday’s round was her best to date.

“I know more about the golf course, so I know which clubs to use,” Starr said. “My scores have been going lower and lower, so that’s good.”
