NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal senior Kevontaye Caston has committed to play for the University of Southern Mississippi.
The Saints’ star pulled the trigger on Saturday, saying the Hattiesburg-based campus “felt like home.”
“It feels good to be going there,” Caston said. “It’s like a family.”
The do-it-all athlete said he was extended a scholarship offer from USM coach Jay Hopson on the heels of having a standout week at the Golden Eagles’ camp where he recorded a blistering 4.36 40-yard dash.
“(After the run) one of the (USM) coaches started asking me where I was from and what school I went to,” Caston said. “Then from there, Coach Hopson was just looking at me the rest of the camp.
Caston said he performed equally well in the position drills at the camp.
The 6-foot, 175 pounder threw for 2,348 yards and 31 touchdowns last season for Trinity.
USM was Caston’s first scholarship, and the Trinity standout said the Golden Eagles are recruiting him to play wide receiver and to also return kicks.
Caston said Hopson was full of excitement when he made his pledge to USM.
“He said, ‘Glad to have you as a Golden Eagle,’” Caston said.
