LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — The 14-and-under Vidalia Little League All Stars dropped its first game Saturday at the Southwest Regional, but rebounded strongly in its nightcap to go 1-1 in pool play action.
The all-stars fell to Texas East 14-5 before topping the host Los Alamos 6-0 in the nightcap.
“I think our girls came out a little weary of the weather because the air is so thin, we had a couple of players short of breath,” Vidalia coach Leigh Anne Mason said. “In the second game, we settled down a little bit and played a little defense.”
Vidalia was charged by a standout pitching performance by Shelby Mason, who went six shutout innings and struck out nine batters.
Mason also had two RBIs at the plate, while MacKenna Patt and Alyssa Howard each had two hits, including a home run from Howard in the seventh.
Shelbi Cross added a run-scoring single for Vidalia
In the opener, Patt led her squad with two hits, including a double.
The all-stars will play two games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. today before bracket play begins Monday.
“We’re looking now to win the next two, and if we do that, then we will be in the single-elimination bracket,” Mason said.
