Tate Lipscomb picked up his first win as the new head coach of Adams County Christian School’s fast-pitch softball team as the Lady Rebels of Natchez held on for an 8-5 win over host Central Private School Lady Rebels Friday afternoon in the season-opener for both teams.
ACCS took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Central Private made it interesting by scoring three runs off starting pitcher Anna McDaniel.
However, McDaniel would not be denied the win in the circle as she put an end to the attempted rally.
“Anna did a great job,” Lipscomb said. “She threw a lot of strikes. She battled through some tough times. She had command of her fastball. She was hitting her spots, inside and outside. Her changeup was holding them off balance.”
McDaniel held Central Private to just three hits and struck out seven batters, but she also walked six batters.
ACCS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and had a 3-1 lead after two innings of play.
ACCS then scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-1 advantage.
After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, Central Private was held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when it scored one run.
ACCS finished with nine hits in the game. McDaniel helped her own cause by going 3-for-4, and Carly Delaney went 2-for-3.
“We put the ball in play a lot, but we couldn’t get that timely hit. We left a lot of runners on base,” Lipscomb said. “We only had one strikeout today, so that was very good.”
ACCS (1-0) plays host to Parklane Academy Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Centreville 5, Brookhaven 2
BROOKAHVEN — Centreville Academy softball coach Robert Bordelon’s first game as a softball coach may not have played out how he pictured it, but the result was still a win.
Thanks to a five-run rally in the top of the seventh inning, Bordelon and the Lady Tigers still came away with a 5-2 win over Brookhaven Academy in the first game of the season.
Centreville was down 2-0 in the seventh inning. The first run came across with an RBI safety squeeze from Lady Tiger Brianna Sterling. Centreville hit back-to-back doubles from Katelyn Chandler and Alexis Evans to open up the game.
“We’d been struggling to get runners on base,” Bordelon said. “We finally got a runner on, and we called a squeeze. That broke the ice, and we finally started hitting.”
Rileigh Illen earned the win for Centreville. She struck out three batters over seven innings. Sydney Lyons had two hits with one RBI and Macie Miley had a triple with one RBI.
Centreville (1-0) hosts Cathedral High School at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
