Heading down the final stretch at Beau Pré Country Club, Larry Davis needed a memorable finish to take home the 2016 Miss-Lou Hackers Invitational championship.
Tha’ts just what he got.
Davis birdied the last four holes, including sinking some difficult putts.
“I made two putts in a row, about 20-footers,” Davis said. “I just got in a groove.”
This year marks the seventh year of the two-day invitational, which is comprised primarily of a large group of friends looking for a weekend of fun.
“Me and Brian Fisher put this tournament together basically to get friends back together,” tournament organizer Josh Hargon said. “It’s the one time we all get together. I think we all mark it on our calendars. Our wives know, hey, we’re coming to do this.”
Hargon said the tournament field has steadily grown through the years, beginning with 16 participants in its first year and culminating with 50 this year.
“I don’t think it’s going away,” Hargon said. “It’s only gotten bigger.”
Davis shot a 78 Saturday and followed it up with a 75 Sunday to win the tournament. It was not all smooth sailing for the Natchez native, though.
“On the front nine, I shot 40,” Davis said. “Then on the back (nine), I made bogeys on the first three holes.”
Davis said this invitational his first time having taken part. He was convinced by other participants to join in the fun.
“I’m from Natchez, but I’ve been living out in Tyler, Texas for about three years,” he said. “Just some of my buddies play in it … and it was great. The tournament was awesome. The food and camaraderie was great. Everyone had a good time.”
