Cathedral High School’s Emma Hogue rose to the occasion when her team needed her the most Monday.

The Lady Green Wave senior blasted a shot past Copiah Academy’s Taylor Walters in a penalty shootout to give her squad the win.

“I was the last one (to kick), and I hate being the last one, because it always comes down to you,” Emma said. “I just chose a side and went for it. The whole game was an adrenaline rush, so when (the ball) hit the back of the net, an excitement just came over me.”

Cathedral outscored Copiah Academy 3-2 in the overtime frame after the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in the regulation.

In addition to her three saves in overtime, CHS goalkeeper Sydney Jackson made a slew of nifty stops in regulation.

“It was exciting,” Lady Green Wave coach Dennis Hogue coach said. “We were a little sloppy. We’ve been rained out some. We had a game (Aug. 23), and we haven’t had a game since.”

The Lady Green Wave struck first in the opening half only to have the Lady Colonels tie the game minutes later.

In the second half, Cathedral went ahead after Gracie Bertlesen knocked in a goal off a long cross from Marli Vaughn.

But Copiah knotted it again following a 25-yard free kick from Lexi Cora.

“I think we played good,” Emma said. “We were definitely rougher than what we usually are, but that’s just how some teams are.”

Cathedral will attempt to continue the momentum Thursday when it travels to Brookhaven Academy.

“I have a lot of confidence,” Dennis said. “We have a lot of talent. We’re just not getting enough time together to work out that timing and chemistry, but I think we’ll go to the playoffs. The talent is there. If we put in the effort and the work, then we can do it.”
