DUNBARTON, La. — Services for Jeff Cowan, 89, a lifelong resident of Dunbarton, La., who died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, La., surrounded by his loving family, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Dunbarton Baptist Church with the Rev. Elbert Sanson officiating.

Burial will follow at Cypress Grove Cemetery in Dunbarton, La., with military and Masonic honors, under the direction of Comer Funeral Home in Ferriday.

Visitation will be from 5 to 10 p.m. today at the church.

Mr. Cowan was born June 30, 1927, in Ferriday, the son of Albert and Alice Tarver Cowan.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as a tail gunner on the B-29 Bomber. He was a lifelong member and deacon of Dunbarton Baptist Church. He was also a volunteer for the Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 and a member of the Ferriday Masonic Lodge No. 390 for 65 years and received his 50 year apron in 2001.

Mr. Cowan was a Master Mason and served in a number of offices over the years. He was currently serving as treasurer for the lodge.

Mr. Cowan loved the Lord and his family with all of his heart and will surely be missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Ruth Cowan; five brothers, Virgil Cowan, Bill Cowan, Curtis Cowan, Irvin Cowan and Raymond Cowan; two sisters, Edith Cowan and Betty Hollis; and one son-in-law, Freddie C. “Pete” Cooper.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Nina Ruth Cowan; four children, Harold and wife, Edna, of Clayton, James and wife, Debbie, of Ridgecrest, Susan Cooper of Sicily Island and Linda Hedrick and husband, Kenneth, of Ferriday; seven grandchildren, Jason Cowan, Alecia Wiley and husband, Jason, Will Cowan and wife, Brandy, Dusti Stowers and husband, Benjy, Jared Hedrick, David Hedrick and wife, Whitney, and Ivan Hedrick and wife, Mandy; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Guice and husband, Jim, of Dunbarton; three brothers, Earl Cowan and wife, Jan, of Centerton, Ark., Harvey Cowan and wife, Ann, and John Cowan and wife, Hilda, all of Dunbarton; one sister-in-law, Sue Cowan of Dunbarton; one brother-in-law, Max Hollis of Dunbarton; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Cowan, Michael Cowan, Jason Wiley, Will Cowan, Benjy Stowers, Monty Warshaw, Craig Cowan and Harvey Lee Cowan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cecil Morgan, Bobby Joe Cowan and Quenten Mathews.
