Melrose to close mansion for renovations

NATCHEZ — Melrose mansion will be closed from Thursday until Sept. 23 for renovations.

During the closure, contractors and artisans will replaster and repaint portions of the mansion’s interior as well as install reproduction bed hangings on the antique beds.

The mansion will reopen Sept. 24 — National Public Lands Day — and free tours of the Melrose mansion will be offered at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Melrose grounds and slave cabin exhibits will remain open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Thursday and Friday while Melrose is closed. Free walking tours of the Melrose gardens will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays during the closure at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

At the William Johnson House on State Street, self-guided tours of the family home are always free of charge. The house is currently open on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The newly opened Fort Rosalie site on South Canal Street is open to the public from day until dusk every day, with picnic tables close to parking.
