ACCS, WCCA set to tangle

The theme of week 4 in MAIS football is familiar faces.

Wilkinson County Christian Academy head coach Curtis McGraw is a former assistant coach of Adams County Christian School coach David King during his first season as head coach of the Rebels.

The ACCS (1-2) Rebels notched their first win over Bowling Green last week, while the defending MAIS A-AA state champion Rams (3-0) are happy with a 3-0 start to the 2016 campaign.

King said McGraw and his squad know what it takes to battle adversity.

“I know he’s a winner,” King said. “Those guys compete play after play. They have some good skill players and offensive linemen. You can tell those kids want to win.”

McGraw knows his team is facing a sound AAA squad with an experienced front seven, and the roster sizes are stacked against them.

The Rams capitalized on running the ball last week. Racking up 435 team rushing yards against Clinton Christian Academy. The Rams, however, were unable to complete a pass on seven attempts.

The former ACCS assistant said Rebels’ defensive coordinator Richy Spears will have his defense ready to plug up the running game. Still, the Rams offense plans to maintain the status quo.

“I think we’re going to have to try to stick to the running game and run the clock,” McGraw said. “I’ve known Coach Spears as long as he’s been at ACCS, and he’s one of the best defensive coaches in the state. When he has (the defense) rolling, it’s special to watch.”

On the other side, King thinks the Rebels have found the winning formula.

ACCS pounded the ball for 344 yards on the back of DyKevis Ford’s 123 yards. The Rebels mixed in Julian Wilson, who added 83 yards.

King said the speed of the game seemed to return to normal against last week’s AAA opponent, but he is challenging his players to cut down on turnovers that resulted in two lost fumbles.

“We want to clean up some things,” King said. “There were some fumbles and missed blocking assignments … The high school game is about turnovers and big plays.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. today at WCCA.
