Cathedral High School soccer faced a young Discovery Christian squad and demonstrated it’s in good condition for the approaching MAIS playoffs after a 10-1 win.

“We wanted to work on overlapping runs and connecting passes,” head coach Dennis Hogue said. “Our plan was to use this as a tune-up for the next two days.”

Cathedral scored nine goals in the first half.

On senior night, three seniors found the back of the net.

Gracie Burtelsen scored three goals, all three in the first half. Mary Francis Sessions scored near the end of the first half, and Emma Hogue tacked on Cathedral’s lone second-half goal to bring her personal total to three.

Burtelson said the Lady Greenwave tested their timing on runs and ability to execute set pieces as efficiently as possible.

“We kind of expected it,” Burtelsen said of the early nine-goal lead. “(Discovery) had a couple of solid players, and they got a goal on us, so they did well.”

Several Cathedral underclassmen scored. Olivia Moore opened up the Cathedral barrage in approximately the second minute of the game. Emily Hicks scored her first goal midway through the first half and scored Cathedral’s ninth consecutive goal at the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half, Dennis Hogue tested his junior varsity squad against the young Discovery team.

With 10 of Hogue’s key players graduating, he said time against a varsity squad was valuable for his youngsters.

“They were excited to play a varsity squad,” Hogue said. “When they get up there, they haven’t quite worked out the timing and spacing with each other … but I’m really excited about them in the future.”

Discovery was the first of three consecutive district games to round out the regular season. Cathedral will face Laurel Christian today and a season finale against cross-town rival Adams County Christian School.

Cathedral has all but locked up the district title. The Lady Greenwave lead Laurel by four goals and ACCS by six goals.

“We feel confident about hosting a playoff game,” Hogue said. “We want to do something that no other Cathedral girls team has done, and that’s go to a second round playoff game.”

Burtelsen said she looks forward to playing an ACCS squad is on a hot streak since last weekend.

“I’m excited to play (ACCS) again,” Burtelsen said. “They’re always a fun competitor.”
