Vidalia can’t slow down Avoyelles, 20-13

Avoyelles High School didn’t score 70 points on Vidalia High School like it did last year. The Mustangs, however, made sure the Vikings would not avenge that loss.

Led by a ball-controlled offense that took a lot of time off the clock, Avoyelles held on for a 20-13 win over Vidalia Friday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game that extended the Vikings’ losing streak to three consecutive games.

“They scored more points than we did. They tried to control the ball and time of possession,” Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock said. “They ran the double wing on us. They held the ball pretty much the entire third quarter.”

Vidalia struck first on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Weatherly to Jordan Mays with 9:50 to go in the first quarter. But Avoyelles responded with a 13-yard touchdown pass and a 35-yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead by the end of the opening quarter.

“Our defense played well. They forced some turnovers, but we couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had when we had the ball on offense,” Hancock said.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 20-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:19 remaining. The Vikings made it 20-13 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Weatherly to Ryan Godbold.

Weatherly completed 11 of 22 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

“We planned on throwing the ball more tonight, but we weren’t able to throw it enough,” Hancock said.
Godbold had seven receptions for 95 yards and one touchdown.

Vidalia (2-3, 0-2) plays at district rival Jena High School at 7 p.m. next Friday.
