ACCS rides winning streak into East Rankin

After key wins the last two weeks against district rivals Columbia Academy and Cathedral High School, Adams County Christian School coach David King is wary of Friday night’s tilt at East Rankin Academy being a “trap game” for his squad.
“We’ve had two big, momentum type games, emotional games in a row,” King said. “And now you get a road game, and you kind of want to see how your team responds.
“(Defensive coordinator Richy) Spears and I have been up all week worried about it. It’s kind of a perfect storm game (for a potential loss).”
King said his team will have to play at its best against AAAA East Rankin (2-5), who perhaps has revenge on its mind after last year’s narrow 40-39 loss to ACCS.
The Rebels (6-2) took the lead over the Patriots in the final 20 seconds after Shavarick Williams hauled in a 37-yard touchdown toss from Carlos Woods.
“They’re a good ball club, and they gave us fits last year,” King said. “They run the triple-option, and it’s one of the most unique offenses to defend.”
ACCS rolls into East Rankin riding a six-game winning streak. The Rebels dropped their first two contests of the year to AAAA opponents, Madison-Ridgeland Academy and Jackson Academy. King said Friday’s game is of added importance because of its potential impact in playoff positioning.
“The (MAIS) game has changed so much in the last three years because of the power points,” King said. “You can’t go over there and lay an egg. You’ve got to play each game.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
