The Hurricanes scored 24 first-half points en route to storming past Farm Bureau 26-0 in AYA youth football action Saturday morning.
Tanner Wimberly hauled in a long 48-yard touchdown grab, and Tris McCoy had two big scoring runs to lift their team to the win.
Wimberly added a sack in the end zone for a safety on the game’s final play.
“They came out and controlled the line of scrimmage, and we were able to do what we needed to do,” Hurricanes coach Kemp Hairston said.
The Hurricanes (4-1) started out in a furry with quarterback Noah Russ connecting with Wimberly deep down the middle of the field.
Russ then put his squad ahead 8-0 when he found Mason Moore in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion.
“(Russ) throws it pretty well,” Hairston said. “The line gave him plenty of time, but he can throw it.”
Jake Hairston recorded two interceptions for the Hurricanes.
Farm Bureau coach Sam Gwin said his team has been outmanned all season long, having to start several fourth graders while opposing teams play primarily fifth and sixth graders.
“We’ve got it tough,” Gwin said. “It’s just almost impossible; it’s David and Goliath every game. We don’t have any depth, and we’re playing some monster sixth graders. It’s been a tough season for us.”
Farm Bureau’s Scott Gwin hauled in two catches and recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter.
Sam Gwin said what his squad has learned most this season is patience and demonstrating an unwillingness to fold.
“They’ve come back strong every time,” he said. “We’ve lost every game big, but they keep hanging in there.”
Farm Bureau will be back in action next Saturday at noon against the AC Gatorz, while the Hurricanes take on Delta Charter at 11 a.m.
“That’s a big game for us,” Hairston said.
